DESCRIPTION:Join the UCLA SNF Center and the Museum of Cycladic Art\, Athens\, for an inside look into the Museum’s unparalleled collection of Cycladic art. Go behind the scenes to view figurines\, vases\, tools\, weapons\, and pottery from all phases of the distinctive Cycladic island culture that flourished in the central Aegean during the Early Bronze Age (third millennium BC). \nMetaxia Routsi was born in 1973 in Munich. She graduated from the Department of History and Archaeology of the University of Ioannina. She has participated in many systematic excavations\, such as the Mycenaean cemetery in Kallithea in Patra\, the Minoan Palace of Archanes in Crete\, etc. From 1999 to 2004 she worked as an archaeologist at the Ministry of Culture\, Ephorate of Antiquities of the Cyclades. She has worked in many excavations of prehistoric sites\, such as the\nEarly Cycladic cemetery in Chalandriani of Syros\, the Neolithic settlement in Strofilas of Andros\, the Mesolithic settlement in Maroulas of Kithnos\, etc. She has undertaken the study and publication of material culture of an Archaic cemetery\, excavated by Y. DESCRIPTION:  \nWith a new museum and hospital underway\, and with plans for a new airport\, the city of Sparta is undergoing dramatic changes. In this wide-ranging conversation\, UCLA SNF Hellenic Center Director Sharon Gerstel and Anastasia Loukaitou-Sideris\, Associate Dean of the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs and Distinguished Professor of Urban Planning\, chat with Mayor Petros Doukas about his city—its strong roots in a proud ancient past and its exciting plans for the future. This conversation will touch on the challenges of governance\, large infrastructure plans\, partnerships with the Stavros Niarchos Foundation\, managing traffic\, and the 2\,500-year anniversary of the Battle of Thermopylae. \nDr. Petros Doukas\, Mayor of Sparta\, holds an MBA from Columbia University and a PhD in Economics from New York University. He is the author of Modern Economic and Management Theories and Classical Greek Thought and has published numerous collections of poetry. He has vast experience in finance and has served as a Citibank executive in New York\, a Vice President\, Country Head & Treasurer of Citibank Greece\, and Chairman of Board of Directors of Heracles\, Ericsson Greece\, Pepsico Greece\, and Nova PayTV Group. He is also President of Capital Partners SA\, Mergers & Acquisitions Advisors. From 2004-2009 he represented the Attica Region as an elected Member of Parliament and also served as Deputy Minister of Finance and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. SUMMARY:Marcia Haddad Ikonomopoulos\, Museum Director\, Kehila Kedosha Janina\, “Meet Me on the Corner of Broome and Allen: A Visit to Kehila Kedosha Janina”
DESCRIPTION:Marcia Haddad Ikonomopoulos gives us a virtual tour of Kehila Kedosha Janina\, the only Romaniote synagogue in the Western Hemisphere. The congregation was founded in 1906 by Greek Jewish immigrants from Ioannina\, but the synagogue itself was not erected until 1927. The years from then until the Second World War were a time of prosperity for the Romaniote community in the Lower East Side: there were three rabbis in the synagogue\, and on the High Holidays\, there was often only standing room for synagogue services. After the Second World War\, many congregants moved to other boroughs and parts of Manhattan\, including Harlem\, the Bronx\, and Brooklyn\, though these communities are no longer active. Although the community has steadily dwindled since its pre-war heyday\, services are still held on Shabbat and Jewish holidays. A documentary film about the synagogue and community\, “the Last Greeks on Broome Street” was produced in the early 2000s. It is directed\, written and narrated by Ed Askinazi\, whose great-grandparents were among the congregation’s founders. \nKehila Kedosha Janina is somewhat unusual for a Romaniote synagogue in that it runs north-south with the Ehal on the north side (Romaniote synagogues typically run east to west)\, the bimah is in the center of the main sanctuary (most Romaniote synagogues place the bimah on the west wall)\, and the internal stairway for the women’s balcony. It is typical in the fact that men and women sit separately (a feature of all Orthodox synagogues). The second-floor women’s gallery contains a museum with artifacts\, exhibits\, and Judaica on Jewish life in Greece and the history of Greek Jews as well as a gift shop. Exhibited items are housed in cases along the walls on either side behind the seats\, as well as in the area immediately in front of the staircase. \n Marcia Haddad Ikonomopoulos is Museum Director of Kehila Kedosha Janina Synagogue and Museum in New York City. She is also President of the Association of Friends of Greek Jewry\, Former Director of Special Projects for Sephardic House\, a teacher of Judaic Studies from 1990-2010\, and a translator of Greek Jewish Holocaust memoirs. \nThis event is co-sponsored by the Panepirotic Federation of America. \nTo participate in this event\, please RSVP here.
