SUMMARY:Mara Verykokou\, "1821: The Collectors' Choice.' An Exhibition Commemorating the Greek War of Independence from an Original Viewpoint."
DESCRIPTION:Benaki Museum curator Mara Verykokou guides us through an exhibition that includes more than 300 objects related to the Revolution of 1821 and the movement of Philhellenism in Europe and America from four important private collections: Nikitas Stavrinakis and Evangelias Stavrinaki\, Petros Vergos\, Apostolos Argyriadis and Stéphan Adler. We shall be asked to decide whether the illustration of the Revolution in the daily life of the West was simply a fashion of the time or something deeper\, which expressed the support for the struggle of the Greeks for freedom. \nMara Verykokou joined the Benaki Museum in 2003 as assistant curator of the Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Collection and she is currently its acting head. She obtained her MA in History of Art from the University of Aberdeen and her MA in Museum Studies from University College London. She is a Ph.D. candidate at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens\, School of History and Archaeology\, with the thesis subject ‘Exhibition policy and communication in the Benaki Museum from the 1970s to the present (1970-2015) in the context of periodic exhibitions.’ Verykokou has been involved as a member of the research team in various exhibition projects\, including “Heaven and Earth; Art of Byzantium from Greek Collections” (National Gallery of Washington 2013-14\, J. Paul Getty Museum\, Los Angeles 2014\, Art Institute of Chicago 2014-15) and participated in the coordination of “Russian Religious Art from Russia to Greece” (Benaki Museum 2017-18). SUMMARY:Spyros Kizis\, "PAPADOPOULOS 100: Exhibiting a Century of Greek Entrepreneurship and Taste."
DESCRIPTION:2022 marks one hundred full years in operation for the biscuit and food manufacturing company E.J. PAPADOPOULOS S.A. Through the items of the Historical Archive of the PAPADOPOULOU Company—one of the most complete and best-organized archives of a Greek company—the Benaki Museum presents for the first time all the important aspects of the hundred-year history and action of one of the largest Greek companies in the field of nutrition. This lecture highlights the ingredients in this hundred-years success: the history of the company\, how its products are made\, and the importance of its brand. This is the story of the Papadopoulos family\, who for a century has been holding the reins of this Greek industry. The exhibition was curated by Erato Koutsoudaki\, architect-museologist\, and Spyros Kizis\, product and interior designer. \nSpyros Kizis was born in Athens in 1986. He earned his diploma in Product and Systems Design Engineering from the University of the Aegean – DPSD in 2011. He holds an MA in Product Design from the University of Edinburgh – Edinburgh College of Art. He has been awarded the Andrew Grand award from the University of Edinburgh\, nominated for the Materials Innovation fellowship from The Arts Foundation\, Red Dot Award 2014\, Pentawards Silver 2014\, and Dromeas 2013 3rd prize. His work has been exhibited in Edinburgh\, London\, Milan\, Ekaterinburg\, Athens\, and Thessaloniki. SUMMARY:Dinos Kogias\, "Souvenir of Kütahya: Imprints of History on Kütahya Pottery (late 19th-early 20th century)"
DESCRIPTION:The decorative repertoire of the pottery produced in Kütahya\, a town in western Turkey and a major ceramic center in Ottoman times\, has been influenced by events of modern history\, such as the Balkan Wars\, the Ottoman Constitution of 1908\, and the Greek-Turkish War (1919-1922). Τhe purpose of this lecture is to contribute to our knowledge and understanding of Kütahya pottery from the end of the nineteenth century through the first decades of the twentieth while presenting certain little-known aspects of this production\, particularly during the fifteen-month period of the town’s occupation by the Greek armed forces from July 1921 to August 1922. During this period\, the production of pottery\, which had been interrupted because of the war\, resumed and a large number of items ended up in Greece\, mainly brought back by Greek soldiers. Many of these ceramics bear Greek commemorative inscriptions\, as ‘souvenirs of Kütahya\,’ with the initials or even full names of their first owners\, and accordingly serve as important historical evidence of specific social and cultural referents. \nDinos Kogias was born in 1964 in Karlovasi\, Samos. He lives and works as a lawyer in Athens. He collects\, researches and writes about modern Greek\, Ottoman and Balkan ceramics. He is a founding member of DIKTIO\, a Southeast European ceramics research group\, and regularly participates in related international symposia. He has published two books on his home island of Samos [Samos 1862- 1920: Photos and Postcards and The tram at Karlovasi\, Samos (1905-1939)] and one on the pottery of Kütahya\, published by the Benaki Museum: SOUVENIR OF KÜTAHYA: Imprints of History on Kütahya’s Pottery (late 19th – early 20th century). SUMMARY:Takis Mavrotas\, "Theofilos: 'The Evzone of Painting'"
DESCRIPTION:This lecture\, co-sponsored by the Embassy of Greece\, will be introduced by Her Excellency Alexandra Papadopoulou\, Ambassador of Greece to the United States \nThe acclaimed folk artist Theophilos represents the tradition of Greece and its people. Born in ca. 1870 in a village close to Mytilene\, his father was a cobbler while his mother\, Penelope Hatzimihail\, was the daughter of an icon painter. In 1897\, he settled in the town of Volos on the Greek mainland\, and worked as a freelance painter\, creating murals in inns\, houses\, and shops in various villages in the area. His paintings fall into two categories: those inspired by life and those inspired by Greek mythology\, history\, and religion. His work was fundamental to the Generation of the 1930s\, whose artists viewed his paintings as the essence of Greekness. This year\, the B. & M. Theocharakis Foundation in Athens has organized a large retrospective\, including loans from the Municipality of Mytilene and the Theophilos Museum. The ninety-four exhibited works manifest the artist’s spirit and soul\, his inner truth that always served and respected the nation’s needs – a nation that has lived both glorious as well as tragic moments. Our event begins with greetings from the Foundation’s General Manager\, Dr. Fotis Papathanasiou\, and its Board Advisor and Contemporary Curator Marina Miliou Theocharakis\, who will both make a short presentation about the Foundation. Exhibition curator Takis Mavrotas will lecture about the painter and his work. Finally\, Evangelia Efthimiadou (Exhibitions Project Manager) and Irene Alexandrakis (Education Manager) will take us on a virtual tour of this important exhibition. \nTakis Mavrotas is Director of Visual Arts at the B. & M. Theocharakis Foundation. He has curated numerous individual and group exhibitions\, including: “Views of Magna Grecia” by Enzo Crea (National Bank of Greece Educational Foundation\, Athens\, 1987); “Takis-Chryssa” (European Cultural Centre of Delphi\, 2000); “Pillars and Columns” (European Cultural Centre of Delphi\, 2005); “The Cyclades through the Lens of 20 Contemporary Artists” (Goulandris Museum of Cycladic Art\, Athens\, 2005); “Giorgio de Chirico and Greece: A Journey through Memory” (Athinais Cultural Center\, Athens/Onassis Foundation\, New York\, 2007); “A Forest of Sculptures—The Simon Spierer Collection from the Darmstadt State Museum” (Athinais Cultural Center\, Athens\, 2008); “35 visual artists stand for Democracy” (Zappeion\, Athens\, 2009); “Leonardo Cremonini” (Athinais Cultural Center\, Athens\, 2010); “C. P.
