DESCRIPTION:100th Anniversary Commemoration \nThe Great Fire of Smyrna – The Genocide of Greeks in Asia Minor Remembered\nSeptember 18\, 1:00 pm (CDT) | Hosted by Illinois Holocaust Museum \nThe Great Fire of Smyrna (Καταστροφή της Σμύρνης) started on September 13\, 1922\, after the Turkish armed forces entered Smyrna\, a deliberate act by the Turkish government to destroy or expel Greeks and any other Christian population. The entire Greek and Armenian quarters of the city were destroyed\, forcing civilians to flee. Historians believe that the number of victims was in the tens of thousands\, while the number of refugees was over a million. \nJoin us online or at Illinois Holocaust Museum with Asia Minor and Pontos Hellenic Research Center for an afternoon of discussion and presentations by renowned scholars and educators as they address one of the most tragic events in modern Greek history. DESCRIPTION:On June 23 and 24\, The UCLA SNF Hellenic Center staff will be attending the Nostos festival in Athens. \nSNF Nostos is an international\, multidimensional festival bursting with avant-garde art\, scintillating conversation\, daring ideas\, irresistible music\, moving dance\, delightful performances\, participatory entertainment\, and lively sports activities for visitors of all ages. \nSNF Nostos combines a fresh lineup of beloved Greek and international artists with annual signature events: the SNF Nostos Conference featuring luminaries from diverse spheres\, the evening SNF Nostos RUN\, and the SNF Dialogues. \nThis year\, on June 23 & 24\, the SNF is taking a fresh new approach to the SNF Nostos Conference. In collaboration with journalism nonprofit iMEdD (the incubator for Media Education and Development) and with integral participation by young people coming from different fields\, countries\, and perspectives\, the SNF is creating an open\, interactive\, and dynamic two-day event for all. As part of this effort\, the SNF has created the SNF Nostos Youth Advisory Committee—a group of young people that offers space for open dialogue\, for listening to young people’s concerns and opinions on health-related issues\, and for inviting them to help shape the program of the SNF Nostos Conference. \nAt the Conference\, we will discuss the progress of the SNF Health Initiative and the core values that underpin all its individual projects\, including ensuring access to high-quality health services for all\, harnessing the power of public-private partnerships\, and implementing an open\, transparent\, and participatory development process. SUMMARY:The Valerie Estes Memorial Lecture and Performance: "Echoes of the Great Catastrophe: Re-Sounding Anatolian Greekness in Diaspora\," by Panayotis (Paddy) League
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, Professor Panayotis League explores the legacy of the “Great Catastrophe”—the death and expulsion from Turkey of 1.5 million Greek Christians following the Greco-Turkish War of 1919–1922—through the music and dance practices of Greek refugees and their descendants over the last one hundred years. Drawing on original ethnographic research conducted in Greece (on the island of Lesvos in particular) and in the Greater Boston area\, Dr. League will analyze handwritten music manuscripts\, homemade audio recordings\, and contemporary live performances\, tracing the routes of repertoire and style over generations and back and forth across the Atlantic Ocean and investigating ways that the particular musical traditions of the Anatolian Greek community have contributed to their understanding of their place in the global Greek diaspora and the wider post-Ottoman world. \nThe lecture will be followed by a concert drawing on Dr. League‘s lifelong immersion in Greek traditions\, exploring intertextual relationships between songs from the Greek Aegean islands and associated poetry\, performed on laouto (steel-string lute)\, guitar\, and tsambouna (goatskin bagpipe). \nPanayotis (Paddy) League (Professor of Musicology & Director of the Center for Music of the Americas\, Florida State University) is a musicologist\, author\, performer\, and composer specializing in the traditional music\, dance\, and oral poetry of the Greek islands\, Brazil\, and Ireland – as well as the electric guitar music of the American South. SUMMARY:Eleni Kefala\, "Strangers No More: Constantinople\, Tenochtitlan\, and the Trauma of the Conquest"
DESCRIPTION:The Byzantines had long dreaded the year 1492. According to their calculations based on the Scriptures\, it would bring the end of the world. In an eerie stroke of irony\, they were right in their fears. Even though they were slightly off in the timing of the fall of Constantinople into the hands of the Ottomans\, they anticipated with uncanny accuracy the end of the world as they knew it. Columbus’s crossing of the Atlantic paved the way for the European colonization of the Americas. But what is there in common between Byzantium and America beyond some bemusing serendipities? This paper approaches that question by rehistoricizing the fall of Byzantine Constantinople (1453) and Aztec Tenochtitlan (1521) while looking at three sorrowful poems composed by anonymous Greek and Aztec authors soon after the conquest of the Byzantine and Mexica empires.\nEleni Kefala is Senior Lecturer at the University of St Andrews. Her work explores modernity across different periods and cultures from a comparative and interdisciplinary perspective. SUMMARY:Roderick Beaton\, "Asia Minor in the Life and Work of George Seferis"
DESCRIPTION:A Celebration of National Poetry Month \nIn May 1944\, at the height of a new crisis facing the Greek government in exile during World War II\, which he served as a high-ranking diplomat\, George Seferis confided these thoughts to his Alexandrian Greek friend Timos Malanos: ‘It might surprise you if I tell you that the event that has affected me more than anything is the Asia Minor Catastrophe. . . . From the age of 13 I’ve never ceased to be a refugee.’ This talk describes Seferis’s early life in Smyrna and the seaside village of Skala tou Vourla\, and the ways in which he came to reflect on both\, in later essays and poems. Moving forward to the end of the 1940s\, the story resumes when the poet returned to his birthplace while serving in the Greek embassy in Ankara. During this period\, traveling widely in Asia Minor\, Seferis experienced what he termed a ‘wider Hellenism’\, one that encompassed the Hellenistic expansion in the wake of the conquests of Alexander the Great and continued throughout the millennium of the Byzantine Empire. From these later experiences\, and the poems\, essays\, and diaries that he wrote at the time\, it emerges that\, for Seferis\, Asia Minor had become not only his own ‘lost homeland’ and that of his family and more than a million of his contemporaries: it was also the ‘lost homeland’ of Hellenism itself\, whose heartland it had been for many centuries. \nRoderick Beaton grew up in Edinburgh and studied English Literature at Cambridge\, before specializing in Modern Greek studies. For thirty years until his retirement\, he held the Koraes Chair of Modern Greek and Byzantine History\, Language and Literature at King’s College London\, and is now Emeritus. Beaton is the author of several books of non-fiction\, one novel\, and several translations of fiction and poetry\, all of them connected to Greece and the Greek-speaking world. He is a four-time winner of the Runciman Award\, and his books have been shortlisted for the Duff Cooper Prize and the Cundill History Prize. He is a Fellow of the British Academy (FBA)\, a Fellow of King’s College (FKC)\, and Commander of the Order of Honour of the Hellenic Republic. From 2019 to 2021 he served as a member of the Committee “GREECE 2021\,” charged by the Greek government with overseeing events commemorating the 200th anniversary of the start of the Greek Revolution in 1821\, and from September to December 2021 as A.G. Leventis Visiting Professor in Greek at the University of Edinburgh. DESCRIPTION:Celebrated director and actor Yorgos Karamihos pays tribute to General Yannis Makriyannis\, the hero of the 1821 Greek Revolution\, in a show that tells the story of a nation in revolt and an individual in the process of self-formation. Adapting selected passages of Makriyannis’ Memoirs\, a seminal work of Modern Greek letters\, Makriyannis Unplugged renders the Greek hero of the nineteenth century our contemporary\, a figure rooted in a local tradition but with a global significance. The work by Karamihos offers a raw theatrical experience that resonates with Makriyannis’ spirit\, challenging and enriching our understanding of freedom\, community\, duty\, and creativity. \n \nYorgos Karamihos is an acclaimed actor\, director\, and acting teacher\, born and raised in Northern Greece. He has graduated from the Ioanian University with a degree in Philosophy & History\,  as well as from The Greek National Theatre Academy. In 2012 he received a Fulbright Scholarship as an exceptional artist to attend the full-time program at the Stella Adler Academy in Los Angeles\, where he was immediately offered to teach his own acting technique applied on Ancient Greek drama and A. Chekhov as well as theatre history. His credits as an actor include over thirty theatre productions from ancient Greek dramas and Shakespeare to Anton Chekhov\, Tennessee Williams\, and other classical and modern plays. He has also appeared in more than thirty feature films and numerous TV series such as The Durrells in Corfu\, Bulletproof\, Genius (Picasso) among others. Karamihos has also directed multiple theatre plays in several major venues in Greece and the USA. In 2008 he received the national award as Best Stage Actor of Greece. DESCRIPTION:Opening remarks by Her Excellency Alexandra Papadopoulou\, Ambassador of Greece to the United States. \nFor almost three millennia Greek literature has been preserved in a variety of different media\, encompassing inscriptions on stone\, papyrus rolls\, medieval manuscripts\, and\, most recently\, digital formats. It is a checkered history. Natural disasters\, accidents\, wars\, political and religious upheavals have contributed to the loss of much precious material\, yet such losses have been counterbalanced by the efforts of libraries\, monasteries\, and individual collectors and scholars to preserve this important legacy. For the last 50 years\, the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae project at UC Irvine has been collecting all the extant works of Greek literature from antiquity to the present\, with the goal of creating a permanent digital repository. What are the challenges and triumphs of this initiative? What remains to be done and how will scholars and members of a broader community leverage this resource? \nMaria Pantelia is Professor of Classics at the University of California\, Irvine. SUMMARY:Evangelia Balta\, "Karamanlides: Rum Orthodox Turkish-Speaking Anatolians before and after the Population Exchange (1923)"
DESCRIPTION:Opening remarks by Her Excellency Alexandra Papadopoulou\, Ambassador of Greece to the United States. \nThis lecture focuses on the language\, social history\, and culture of the Rum Orthodox population that lived in Asia Minor and the urban centers of the Ottoman Empire. Among these were Orthodox Christians who spoke Turkish as their native language. Like the Turkish-speaking Armenians\, the Greek-speaking Roman Catholics\, and the Ladino- or Turkish-speaking Jews\, the Karamanlides were an ethnic-religious group that formed part of the multi-cultural and multi-lingual Ottoman Empire while maintaining their own culture and tradition. Since the early 18th century\, books (both religious and secular)\, periodicals\, and newspapers in Turkish were printed with Greek letters\, leaving ample evidence for us to discuss this rich cultural heritage. Being Christians\, they were eventually exiled from their homeland\, in accordance with the Treaty of Lausanne (1923). The majority of them settled in Greece\, while others settled in the United States and various European countries.  \nEvangelia Balta is Research Director at the Institute of Historical Research\, National Hellenic Research Foundation. Her interests focus on topics related to Economic and Social History during the Ottoman period and the culture of the Greek Orthodox population of Anatolia. Since 2008 she has organized three International Conferences on Karamanlidika Studies. In addition\, since 2011 she has conducted seminars on Karamanlidika Studies at the annual Intensive Summer School on Cunda Island organized by the Ottoman Studies Foundation at Harvard University. She was made an honorary member of the Turkish Historical Society (2013)\, and she was awarded the “Order of Merit (Liyakat Nişanı)” by the President of the Turkish Republic\, Abdullah Gül (2014). SUMMARY:Takis Mavrotas\, "Theofilos: 'The Evzone of Painting'"
DESCRIPTION:This lecture\, co-sponsored by the Embassy of Greece\, will be introduced by Her Excellency Alexandra Papadopoulou\, Ambassador of Greece to the United States \nThe acclaimed folk artist Theophilos represents the tradition of Greece and its people. Born in ca. 1870 in a village close to Mytilene\, his father was a cobbler while his mother\, Penelope Hatzimihail\, was the daughter of an icon painter. In 1897\, he settled in the town of Volos on the Greek mainland\, and worked as a freelance painter\, creating murals in inns\, houses\, and shops in various villages in the area. His paintings fall into two categories: those inspired by life and those inspired by Greek mythology\, history\, and religion. His work was fundamental to the Generation of the 1930s\, whose artists viewed his paintings as the essence of Greekness. This year\, the B. & M. Theocharakis Foundation in Athens has organized a large retrospective\, including loans from the Municipality of Mytilene and the Theophilos Museum. The ninety-four exhibited works manifest the artist’s spirit and soul\, his inner truth that always served and respected the nation’s needs – a nation that has lived both glorious as well as tragic moments. Our event begins with greetings from the Foundation’s General Manager\, Dr. Fotis Papathanasiou\, and its Board Advisor and Contemporary Curator Marina Miliou Theocharakis\, who will both make a short presentation about the Foundation. Exhibition curator Takis Mavrotas will lecture about the painter and his work. Finally\, Evangelia Efthimiadou (Exhibitions Project Manager) and Irene Alexandrakis (Education Manager) will take us on a virtual tour of this important exhibition. \nTakis Mavrotas is Director of Visual Arts at the B. & M. Theocharakis Foundation. SUMMARY:Dinos Kogias\, "Souvenir of Kütahya: Imprints of History on Kütahya Pottery (late 19th-early 20th century)"
DESCRIPTION:The decorative repertoire of the pottery produced in Kütahya\, a town in western Turkey and a major ceramic center in Ottoman times\, has been influenced by events of modern history\, such as the Balkan Wars\, the Ottoman Constitution of 1908\, and the Greek-Turkish War (1919-1922). Τhe purpose of this lecture is to contribute to our knowledge and understanding of Kütahya pottery from the end of the nineteenth century through the first decades of the twentieth while presenting certain little-known aspects of this production\, particularly during the fifteen-month period of the town’s occupation by the Greek armed forces from July 1921 to August 1922. During this period\, the production of pottery\, which had been interrupted because of the war\, resumed and a large number of items ended up in Greece\, mainly brought back by Greek soldiers. Many of these ceramics bear Greek commemorative inscriptions\, as ‘souvenirs of Kütahya\,’ with the initials or even full names of their first owners\, and accordingly serve as important historical evidence of specific social and cultural referents. \nDinos Kogias was born in 1964 in Karlovasi\, Samos. He lives and works as a lawyer in Athens. He collects\, researches and writes about modern Greek\, Ottoman and Balkan ceramics. He is a founding member of DIKTIO\, a Southeast European ceramics research group\, and regularly participates in related international symposia. He has published two books on his home island of Samos [Samos 1862- 1920: Photos and Postcards and The tram at Karlovasi\, Samos (1905-1939)] and one on the pottery of Kütahya\, published by the Benaki Museum: SOUVENIR OF KÜTAHYA: Imprints of History on Kütahya’s Pottery (late 19th – early 20th century). SUMMARY:Spyros Kizis\, "PAPADOPOULOS 100: Exhibiting a Century of Greek Entrepreneurship and Taste."
DESCRIPTION:2022 marks one hundred full years in operation for the biscuit and food manufacturing company E.J. PAPADOPOULOS S.A. Through the items of the Historical Archive of the PAPADOPOULOU Company—one of the most complete and best-organized archives of a Greek company—the Benaki Museum presents for the first time all the important aspects of the hundred-year history and action of one of the largest Greek companies in the field of nutrition. This lecture highlights the ingredients in this hundred-years success: the history of the company\, how its products are made\, and the importance of its brand. This is the story of the Papadopoulos family\, who for a century has been holding the reins of this Greek industry. The exhibition was curated by Erato Koutsoudaki\, architect-museologist\, and Spyros Kizis\, product and interior designer. \nSpyros Kizis was born in Athens in 1986. He earned his diploma in Product and Systems Design Engineering from the University of the Aegean – DPSD in 2011. He holds an MA in Product Design from the University of Edinburgh – Edinburgh College of Art. He has been awarded the Andrew Grand award from the University of Edinburgh\, nominated for the Materials Innovation fellowship from The Arts Foundation\, Red Dot Award 2014\, Pentawards Silver 2014\, and Dromeas 2013 3rd prize. His work has been exhibited in Edinburgh\, London\, Milan\, Ekaterinburg\, Athens\, and Thessaloniki.
