Prof. Zacharias was not only a respected colleague but also a dear friend\, whose dedication to the field of archaeometry and passion for preserving our cultural heritage left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him. In honor of his memory and contributions\, our panel will be dedicated to him and serve as a tribute to his remarkable legacy. We invite you to join us as we reflect on his enduring impact and celebrate his life and work. \nThe Eastern Mediterranean\, a cradle of ancient civilizations\, stands at the precipice of an unprecedented challenge. Coastal areas\, including the island of Cyprus and Greece\, like other regions in the Mediterranean are witnessing the relentless advance of the sea due to climate change. Rising sea levels\, heightened temperatures\, extreme weather events\, and marine erosion are endangering archaeological sites\, Byzantine relics\, and other critical historic landmarks. With climate data projecting a rise of 90cm in sea level by 2100 in the Mediterranean\, the risk to our global heritage is immediate and undeniable. \nSpeakers:  \nDemetrios Athanasoulis\, Ephorate of Antiquities of Cyclades\, Greece  \nNikolas Bakirtzis\, Cyprus Institute\, Cyprus  \nAlessandra Bonazza\, University of Bologna\, Italy  \nRohit Jigyasu\, ICCROM\, Rome\, Italy  \nAnthi Kaldeli\, Department of Antiquities\, Cyprus  \nAthanasios Vafeidis\, Kiel University\, Germany  \nPurpose of the Panel: \nThis panel aims to address/initiate discussion on two critical aspects: \n\nHighlighting the Threat: An in-depth look at how rising sea levels\, temperature extremes\, and other climate phenomena threaten cultural landmarks\, particularly in low-lying coastal zones of Cyprus and Greece.\nBridging the Awareness Gap: A pressing need to use climate data in decision-making for the cultural heritage sector and enhancing awareness on the imminent risks.\n\nThe emphasis is on the panel as a starting point or a catalyst rather than a conclusion. It’s about bringing the right people together\, introducing the critical topics\, and fostering a shared understanding that can serve as a springboard for future action. \nGoals of the Panel: \n\nTo provide a focused dialogue on the threat of climate change to cultural heritage.\nTo share recent climate and archaeological data\, enhancing understanding of the risks.\nTo discuss practical strategies and foster consensus on mitigating these threats.\n\nExpected Outcomes: \n\nIncreased knowledge sharing between climate experts and cultural heritage specialists.\nStrengthened networking opportunities for future collaboration.\nA consensus on the need for urgent action and the best practices for heritage protection.\nA foundation laid for a comprehensive plan to be further developed in future conferences or workshops.\n\nThis event is being held under the auspices of the Deputy Minister of Culture of the Republic of Cyprus\, the Embassy of Greece in the United States\, the Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus in the United States\, the Consulate General of Greece in Los Angeles and the Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Cyprus in Los Angeles. When do words function as sound and when do notes represent meaning? Is tradition closer to conservatism or progress? Does poetry die when it is sung? Why do religions have hymns? How is it that\, when reading the written word\, we may actually perceive a musical score? What is a product of its time\, what is timeless\, and what is just a waste of time? How many centuries can fit inside three minutes? \nThe song is the breath of humanity through the centuries. \nWe are going to look at its source\, the course it follows\, and where it leads – the obvious paths\, its tools\, but also its intangible elements\, the way it engulfs us\, and how it weaves its way in and all around us. \nThis lecture is for those interested in music\, language\, or sound. And\, of course\, it is for the lovers of song. \nAlkinoos Ioannidis is a singer-songwriter who has released multiple solo albums\, most of which have gone gold or platinum. Born in Nicosia\, Cyprus\, he studied classical guitar at the European Conservatory and studied theatre at the Drama School of the National Theatre of Greece and philosophy at The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens\, and later signed to Universal Music. In addition to writing songs\, he has composed music for dance\, film\, and theater\, and arranged or produced albums for other artists. His symphonic work is often performed by orchestras in different countries. During the last three decades\, he has given more than 2\,000 concerts all over the world.
