DESCRIPTION:17th Los Angeles Greek Film Festival Opening Night \nHosted by the UCLA SNF Center for the Study of Hellenic Culture\nand Los Angeles Greek Film Festival (LAGFF) \nSaturday\, June 3\, 2023\nat UCLA’s James Bridges Theater \n5:00 p.m. Pre-reception\n7:00 p.m. Film Screening & Tribute Award to George Pelecanos \nAdvanced ticket purchase required.Photo by Alexa King. \nJoin us in kicking off the 17th Los Angeles Greek Film Festival! We are proud to co-host with the LAGFF the festival’s opening night\, featuring a screening of Black Stone and honoring the novelist\, screenwriter\, film\, and television producer George Pelecanos with the 2023 Honorary Orpheus Award. Pelecanos’ longtime collaborator\, director\, producer\, and former HBO Executive\, Kary Antholis\, will present the Award. \n\nOur feature film: \nBLACK STONE \nWhile filming absent civil servants\, a documentary crew stumbles upon Haroula\, a desperate\, overprotective Greek mother searching for her son. But when her son is accused of fraud\, Haroula sets out with her other disabled son and a Greek-African taxi driver to bring him back home where he belongs\, even if it means discovering who her son really is. \nWe are joined in discussion by the film’s director\, Spiros Jacovides\, actor and musician Kevin Zans Ansong\, and members of the creative team. \nSpiros Jacovides was born in London and studied Directing at Stavrakou College after completing his Film Studies degree from the London College of Printing. In 1998 he became a guest student of the acclaimed German University of Berlin\, DFFB. Since 2000\, Spiros worked as A.D. in various TV Commercials. Currently\, he writes\, produces\, and directs TVCs\, Web Ads\, Short Docs\, Corporate videos\, and Video Clips. So far\, he has written and directed three short films. “Black Stone” is his first feature film. \n\nBorn in the economically depressed Athenian district of Ambelokipi and growing up in and around the neglected Kipseli neighborhood\, Kevin Zans Ansong (Black Morris) made his first tentative steps in the world of Greek rap next to the legendary MC ‘Taki Tsan’ and has since gone on to flesh out his unique and intuitive voice amongst the new breed in his hometown.
