This Genocide became the model for all Genocides to follow\, Nearly a million Greeks were killed\, and millions more were uprooted as part of the Ottoman and Nationalist Turks’ campaign of ethnic cleansing. Lethal Nationalism explores this dark chapter of history. \nBill Kurtis\, legendary television news anchorman\, narrates this powerful documentary. “This production is one of the most important projects that I’ve ever been associated with and it provides a sobering lesson as to why we should never forget the suffering that is caused by genocide.” – Bill Kurtis \nThe screening will be followed by Q & A with the film’s director and co-producer Peter Lambrinatos\, co-producer Spiro Lambrinatos\, and George Mavropoulos\, President of the Asia Minor and Pontos Hellenic Research Center. DESCRIPTION:Film screening and discussion with filmmaker Mary Zournazi. \nMy Rembetika Blues is a film about the power of music and what makes us human. Rembetika music or the Greek blues is a music of the streets and a music of refugees. The film explores the heart and soul of Rembetika music through peoples’ stories of love\, loss and belonging. \nRembetika developed its roots from migrant experience. Mary Zournazi’s grandmother was one of the 1.2 million refugees who fled the Smyrna disaster in Turkey in 1922 and arrived at the Port of Piraeus in Greece. She\, like many\, became part of a movement of people\, and of tradition\, which saw the birth Rembetika. \nThrough its rawness and unique style\, Rembetika provides one of the world’s foremost musical accounts of migrant experience. Through Mary Zournazi’s grandmother’s story\, Zournazi narrates a personal account of the depth of longing and belonging that is part of the migrant life. By weaving together different stories and interviews\, the film looks at the legacies of history and migration\, and how music can connect people in times of struggle and in times of need. \nDrawing on the parallels of the migrant and economic crisis in Greece\, the film explores the revival of Rembetika today\, and how it continues to convey everyday life and struggle through the fusion of street music\, hip-hop\, and other influences such as Byzantine music and the Blues. \nThe film documents peoples’ memory and experiences that are often left out of the chronicles of history. We are proud to co-host with the LAGFF the festival’s opening night\, featuring a screening of Black Stone and honoring the novelist\, screenwriter\, film\, and television producer George Pelecanos with the 2023 Honorary Orpheus Award. Pelecanos’ longtime collaborator\, director\, producer\, and former HBO Executive\, Kary Antholis\, will present the Award. \n\nOur feature film: \nBLACK STONE \nWhile filming absent civil servants\, a documentary crew stumbles upon Haroula\, a desperate\, overprotective Greek mother searching for her son. But when her son is accused of fraud\, Haroula sets out with her other disabled son and a Greek-African taxi driver to bring him back home where he belongs\, even if it means discovering who her son really is. \nWe are joined in discussion by the film’s director\, Spiros Jacovides\, actor and musician Kevin Zans Ansong\, and members of the creative team. \nSpiros Jacovides was born in London and studied Directing at Stavrakou College after completing his Film Studies degree from the London College of Printing. In 1998 he became a guest student of the acclaimed German University of Berlin\, DFFB. Since 2000\, Spiros worked as A.D. in various TV Commercials. Currently\, he writes\, produces\, and directs TVCs\, Web Ads\, Short Docs\, Corporate videos\, and Video Clips. So far\, he has written and directed three short films. “Black Stone” is his first feature film. \n\nBorn in the economically depressed Athenian district of Ambelokipi and growing up in and around the neglected Kipseli neighborhood\, Kevin Zans Ansong (Black Morris) made his first tentative steps in the world of Greek rap next to the legendary MC ‘Taki Tsan’ and has since gone on to flesh out his unique and intuitive voice amongst the new breed in his hometown. Athens’ Kallimarmaro Stadium is abuzz\, with thousands of people gathered and millions listening through their radios. The AEK – Slavia Prague basketball game has just begun. A girl in love is dreaming of her wedding day\, while her future husband becomes more desperate with every Greek shot through the opposing team’s hoop. An elderly husband and wife remember the home they left behind. A young communist prisoner cheers from his jail cell and a PROPO betting shop becomes the place where old and new wounds resurface. Years before this night\, three Constantinopolitans decided to create an athletic union that will commemorate their story. At the end of this night\, a moment in Greek history had been made. \nDIRECTOR BIO\nTassos Boulmetis\, the director of A Touch of Spice and Mythopathy\, built his film\, “1968\,” around a true athletic triumph that made history and united a divided country. Mr. Boulmetis studied Physics at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and Film Production and Direction at the University of California\, Los Angeles (UCLA)\, with a scholarship from the A. S. Onassis Foundation. In Greece he started his career as a director/producer of TV shows for the state TV networks. In 1990 he wrote\, directed and co-produced the film The Dream Factory\, which won awards in both Greece and the U.S. A Touch of Spice\, a film that he wrote\, directed and co-produced became the most successful film ever in Greece with over 1\,600\,00 theater viewers. It has been distributed in 45 countries. His third feature\, Mythopathy\, a coming-of-age story of a young man during the 70’s in Greece\, is a sarcastic comedy about the Greek political system and its path to the recent economic crisis. Boulmetis is currently artist-in-residence for Gefyra. Our discussion of the novel will focus on the author’s representation of society on a remote Greek island. Participants are encouraged to read the novel in Greek or English. \nFrom the publisher: The Murderess (Η Φόνισσα) is a bone-chilling tale of crime and punishment with the dark beauty of a backwoods ballad. Set on the dirt-poor Aegean island of Skiathos\, it is the story of Hadoula\, an old woman living on the margins of society and at the outer limits of respectability. Hadoula knows about herbs and their hidden properties\, and women come to her when they need help. She knows women’s secrets and she knows the misery of their lives\, and as the book begins\, she is trying to stop her new-born granddaughter from crying so that her daughter can at last get a little sleep. The box office opens one hour before the event. \nDuring the Greek Civil War fought between 1946-1949\, childhood itself became a frontline in the clash between government and rebel forces. Under the guise of offering protection and education\, the Greek government enticed parents to surrender their children to a system of Childcare Cities that served as indoctrination mills that oftentimes alienated their wards from their own families.
