Artistic & Festival Director Aristotle Katopodis announced the 2024 Festival lineup of premieres\, screenings\, events and masterclass (June 1-9)\, followed by a virtual film program of screenings and industry webinars (June 9 -16). “We’re thrilled and honored to feature some of the most exciting films and filmmakers available today\,” explains Katopodis. “Showcasing over 80 films in 9 days\, including feature films\, short films\, documentaries\, animation\, and retrospectives\, illustrates our intent to highlight the breadth and depth of the Greek Film Industry that continues to surprise us with top awards in all major film festivals and innovative international co-productions.” \nRed Carpet Opening Night on June 1 features Sofia Exarchou’s multi-awarded ANIMAL\, which also received the Golden Alexander\, Thessaloniki International Film Festival’s top prize last fall. Opening Night Reception is generously presented by European Languages & Movies in America (www.ELMA.org) and will be catered by NICK THE GREEK\, wines offered by AVRA\, liquor and crafted cocktails by DULCE VIDA TEQUILA and EMPRESS GIN\, water provided by SMARTWATER\, non-alcoholic beverages offered by OPTIMA FOODS. The event will take place at the Harmony Gold Theater in West Hollywood. \nRed Carpet Closing Night & Orpheus Awards Celebration on June 9 features MURDERESS based on the classic by Alexandros Papadiamantis. The screening will be preceded by red carpet & appetizers and followed with the Orpheus Awards honoring Greek renowned actress and MURDERESS star Karyofyllia Karabeti. The Closing Night Reception is generously presented by The Kolovos Family and features catering by NICK THE GREEK\, wines offered by AVRA\, mastiha drinks by KLEOS\, liquor and craft cocktails by DULCE VIDA TEQUILA and EMPRESS GIN\, water provided by SMARTWATER\, non-alcoholic beverages offered by OPTIMA FOODS. The event will take place at Pacific Design Center – Silver Screen Theater in West Hollywood. \nNow in its 10th edition\, the DISCOVERY DAYS story & screenplay lab continues to serve as an industry leader in developing artistic international feature film projects as well as fostering ties between filmmakers from Southern Europe / the Balkans and the Los Angeles community of cinema. Many films that have participated in the lab go on to successful paths\, including MEDIUM directed by Christina Ioakeimidi\, screening at this year’s LAGFF. Under the leadership of director Araceli Lemos\, Discovery Days received a record number of submissions and ultimately selected seven projects. Our discussion of the novel will focus on the author’s representation of society on a remote Greek island. Participants are encouraged to read the novel in Greek or English. \nFrom the publisher: The Murderess (Η Φόνισσα) is a bone-chilling tale of crime and punishment with the dark beauty of a backwoods ballad. Set on the dirt-poor Aegean island of Skiathos\, it is the story of Hadoula\, an old woman living on the margins of society and at the outer limits of respectability. Hadoula knows about herbs and their hidden properties\, and women come to her when they need help. She knows women’s secrets and she knows the misery of their lives\, and as the book begins\, she is trying to stop her new-born granddaughter from crying so that her daughter can at last get a little sleep. DESCRIPTION:Giannis in the Cities (2024) – Screening and Q&A with Director Eleni Alexandrakis  \nPresented by the UCLA SNF Center for the Study of Hellenic Culture\nand the UCLA Film & Television Archive \nFebruary 22\, 2026\n7:00 P.M.\nBilly Wilder Theater at the Hammer Museum \nADMISSION IS FREE \nIn 2025\, Giannis in the Cities\, which was screened at Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Los Angeles\, won both the Best Feature Film (Orpheus Award) and the Audience Award at the Los Angeles Greek Film Festival (LAGFF). \nTicketing Information: Admission is free. No advance reservations are required. Seats will be assigned when tickets are picked up at the box office and are available on a first-come\, first-served basis. The box office opens one hour before the event. \nDuring the Greek Civil War fought between 1946-1949\, childhood itself became a frontline in the clash between government and rebel forces. Under the guise of offering protection and education\, the Greek government enticed parents to surrender their children to a system of Childcare Cities that served as indoctrination mills that oftentimes alienated their wards from their own families. In her riveting\, visually striking adaptation of the memoir of Greek writer Giannis Atzakas\, writer-director Eleni Alexandrakis tells the searing story of Giannis and his experience growing up in these harsh institutions all the while unable to shake the memory of his rebel father and his longing for – and aversion to – a reunion. \nDCP\, b/w\, in Greek with English subtitles\, 90 min.
