When do words function as sound and when do notes represent meaning? Is tradition closer to conservatism or progress? Does poetry die when it is sung? Why do religions have hymns? How is it that\, when reading the written word\, we may actually perceive a musical score? What is a product of its time\, what is timeless\, and what is just a waste of time? How many centuries can fit inside three minutes? \nThe song is the breath of humanity through the centuries. \nWe are going to look at its source\, the course it follows\, and where it leads – the obvious paths\, its tools\, but also its intangible elements\, the way it engulfs us\, and how it weaves its way in and all around us. \nThis lecture is for those interested in music\, language\, or sound. And\, of course\, it is for the lovers of song. \nAlkinoos Ioannidis is a singer-songwriter who has released multiple solo albums\, most of which have gone gold or platinum. Born in Nicosia\, Cyprus\, he studied classical guitar at the European Conservatory and studied theatre at the Drama School of the National Theatre of Greece and philosophy at The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens\, and later signed to Universal Music. In addition to writing songs\, he has composed music for dance\, film\, and theater\, and arranged or produced albums for other artists. His symphonic work is often performed by orchestras in different countries. During the last three decades\, he has given more than 2\,000 concerts all over the world. Drawing from fragments of Sappho’s poetry\, Kassiane’s hymns\, as well as four generations of private family writings and oral history\, composer and performer Theodosia Roussos shares the story of her great-grandmother Polymnia Athanasiadis Pappas\, a young woman whose family was expelled from its village by the Ottoman Turks during the Asia Minor Catastrophe. Drawing from fragments of Sappho’s poetry\, Kassiane’s hymns\, as well as four generations of private family writings and oral history\, composer and performer Theodosia Roussos shares the story of her great-grandmother Polymnia Athanasiadis Pappas\, a young woman whose family was expelled from its village by the Ottoman Turks during the Asia Minor Catastrophe. DESCRIPTION:Film screening and discussion with filmmaker Mary Zournazi. \nMy Rembetika Blues is a film about the power of music and what makes us human. Rembetika music or the Greek blues is a music of the streets and a music of refugees. The film explores the heart and soul of Rembetika music through peoples’ stories of love\, loss and belonging. \nRembetika developed its roots from migrant experience. Mary Zournazi’s grandmother was one of the 1.2 million refugees who fled the Smyrna disaster in Turkey in 1922 and arrived at the Port of Piraeus in Greece. She\, like many\, became part of a movement of people\, and of tradition\, which saw the birth Rembetika. \nThrough its rawness and unique style\, Rembetika provides one of the world’s foremost musical accounts of migrant experience. Through Mary Zournazi’s grandmother’s story\, Zournazi narrates a personal account of the depth of longing and belonging that is part of the migrant life. By weaving together different stories and interviews\, the film looks at the legacies of history and migration\, and how music can connect people in times of struggle and in times of need. \nDrawing on the parallels of the migrant and economic crisis in Greece\, the film explores the revival of Rembetika today\, and how it continues to convey everyday life and struggle through the fusion of street music\, hip-hop\, and other influences such as Byzantine music and the Blues. \nThe film documents peoples’ memory and experiences that are often left out of the chronicles of history. SUMMARY:The Valerie Estes Memorial Lecture and Performance: "Echoes of the Great Catastrophe: Re-Sounding Anatolian Greekness in Diaspora\," by Panayotis (Paddy) League
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, Professor Panayotis League explores the legacy of the “Great Catastrophe”—the death and expulsion from Turkey of 1.5 million Greek Christians following the Greco-Turkish War of 1919–1922—through the music and dance practices of Greek refugees and their descendants over the last one hundred years. Drawing on original ethnographic research conducted in Greece (on the island of Lesvos in particular) and in the Greater Boston area\, Dr. League will analyze handwritten music manuscripts\, homemade audio recordings\, and contemporary live performances\, tracing the routes of repertoire and style over generations and back and forth across the Atlantic Ocean and investigating ways that the particular musical traditions of the Anatolian Greek community have contributed to their understanding of their place in the global Greek diaspora and the wider post-Ottoman world. \nThe lecture will be followed by a concert drawing on Dr. League‘s lifelong immersion in Greek traditions\, exploring intertextual relationships between songs from the Greek Aegean islands and associated poetry\, performed on laouto (steel-string lute)\, guitar\, and tsambouna (goatskin bagpipe). \nPanayotis (Paddy) League (Professor of Musicology & Director of the Center for Music of the Americas\, Florida State University) is a musicologist\, author\, performer\, and composer specializing in the traditional music\, dance\, and oral poetry of the Greek islands\, Brazil\, and Ireland – as well as the electric guitar music of the American South. DESCRIPTION:This special event presents rebetiko music inspired by the fearsome prison in Thessaloniki\, dramatic readings of the testimonies of the prisoners\, and images from inside the cells. Once a Byzantine fortress known as the Heptapyrgion\, the prison is now used as offices for the archaeological service\, for performances\, and for exhibitions. Yet\, the voices of the prisoners and the music they inspired still resonates within the structure’s walls.
