DESCRIPTION:Historical Trajectories of Hellenism in Asia Minor\nlecture by\nPaschalis Kitromilides (Academy of Athens) \nDate: May 7\, 2023\nTime: 3:00 PM\nLocation: 314 Royce Hall\nReception to follow \nIntroductory remarks by The Honorable Ioannis Stamatekos\, Consul General of Greece in Los Angeles and The Honorable Andreas Kyprianides\, Honorary Consul General of Cyprus in Los Angeles \nModerated by Sharon Gerstel (UCLA) & Dimitris Krallis (Simon Fraser University) \nProfessor Paschalis Kitromilides will present a survey of the Greek presence in Asia Minor from the original Greek colonization in antiquity to the exodus of the Greek population of the peninsula in the third decade of the twentieth century. He will examine the unity of the Greek world on both shores of the Aegean\, East and West\, for three millennia. Special attention will be paid to the modern period and to the cultural achievements of the “last Hellenism in Asia Minor”. \nPaschalis M. Kitromilides\, Ph.D. at Harvard University\, is a Greek-Cypriot political scientist and intellectual historian. He is Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of Athens and a member of the Academy of Athens. He has been director of the Centre for Asia Minor Studies since 1980 and was Director of the Institute of Neohellenic Research / National Hellenic Research Foundation (2000-2011). He has held visiting appointments at Harvard and Brandeis Universities\, University of Cambridge\, University of Oxford\, the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales\, the European University Institute and the Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies Villa I Tatti. He is the author or editor of over fifty books\, including Enlightenment and Revolution: The Making of Modern Greece (Harvard University Press\, 2013)\, and over two hundred and sixty articles and book reviews in academic journals and collective volumes in Greek and English. DESCRIPTION:Date: April 11\, 2023\nTime: 4:00 PM\nLocation: Royce Hall 306 \nIntroductory remarks\, by The Honorable Ioannis Stamatekos\, Consul General of Greece in Los Angeles \nQ&A moderated by Simos Zenios\, Associate Director\, UCLA SNF Hellenic Center \nReception to follow \nIn this talk\, Professor Kostis Kornetis will examine how distinct political generations experienced and remember the transition from authoritarianism to democracy in Greece\, known as Metapolitefsi\, since 1974. Its central claim is that the 2008-2012 economic and social crisis triggered a radical re-evaluation of democratisation by turning the conflicting generational recollections of these events into pivotal components of current political contestation. To demonstrate this\, Dr. Kornetis tells the oral (hi)stories of transition and its legacy across time\, beyond institutional achievements and setbacks\, which was the standard trope of narrating this story until all too recently. The study draws on in-depth interviews and a close analysis of a selection of memoryscapes (texts\, images\, and music) of the 1970s to make sense of the different generational ways in which the past is being remembered and contested at present\, arguing that “small” and “private” histories matter. As such\, it introduces to the literature and public debate the crucial role of generational memory in shaping the political\, social and cultural developments of the entire post-authoritarian period in Greece and beyond. \nProfessor Kornetis teaches contemporary history at the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM). He has taught at Brown University\, New York University\, and the University of Sheffield\, and was a CONEX-Marie Curie Experienced Fellow at Carlos III\, Madrid\, and Santander Fellow in Iberian Studies at St Antony’s College\, Oxford. He is the author of Children of the Dictatorship. Student Resistance\, Cultural Politics and the ‘long 1960s’ in Greece (Berghahn Books\, 2013 – recipient of the Edmund Keeley book award of the MGSA) and co-editor of Metapolitefsi (Themelio\, 2015)\, Consumption and Gender in Southern Europe since the “Long 1960s” (Bloomsbury\, 2016) and Rethinking Democratisation in Spain\, Greece and Portugal (Palgrave Macmillan\, 2019).
