DESCRIPTION:Alexander the Great (O Megalexandros) Greece\, 1980 \nTheo Angelopoulos insisted that Alexander the Great was his “most simple film” to date for its linear structure\, beginning on New Year’s Eve 1900 and proceeding from there. The film’s straightforward chronology\, however\, belies the complex interplay of Greek Orthodox and Byzantine liturgy\, music\, and ritual that Angelopoulos weaves into this newly urgent politically-charged fable of a would-be liberator who devolves into despotism. DESCRIPTION:The Weeping Meadow (To Livadi pou Dakryzei) Greece\, 2004 \nA family history told in wide shot\, The Weeping Meadow spans the turbulent decades between 1919 and the end of the Greek Civil War in 1949 as they buffet the lives of Eleni (Alexandra Aidini) and her adoptive brother and lover Alexis (Nikos Poursanidis). Taken in by Alexis’ family\, Eleni and Alexis fall in love and flee his oppressive father with the help of itinerant musicians touring the country as it descends into war and chaos. Intended as the first installment in a trilogy of Greek history and with its clear echoes of The Traveling Players (1975)\, The Weeping Meadow feels like a summing up by a director who thought of his films as chapters in one continuous story. \n35mm\, color\, 163 min. SUMMARY:Evita Arapoglou\, "Asia Minor Hellenism: Heyday - Catastrophe - Displacement - Rebirth"
DESCRIPTION:In this lecture\, part of the Hellenic Together 4.0 series held in collaboration with the Benaki Museum in Athens\, exhibition curator Evita Arapoglou leads us through “Asia Minor Hellenism: Heyday – Catastrophe – Displacement – Rebirth.” \nThis program is supported by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF). \nAbout the Exhibit \nVisitors to the exhibition begin their journey in the ‘heyday’ of Asia Minor Hellenism in Ionia and the west coast. They proceed to Cappadocia and the southern provinces\, travel to Pontus\, continue towards the west and the environs of Istanbul\, and end up in Eastern Thrace. \nThe heyday is followed by the period of persecutions\, the conclusion of World War I and the ensuing Treaties\, the period of the Greek landing in Asia Minor and the ensuing Campaign\, the ‘Catastrophe’ of 1922\, as well as the ‘Exodus’ of refugees. \nThe third and final section of the exhibition focuses on the settlement and integration of refugees in Greece\, as well as their impact on many sectors of Greek society. Part of the epilogue of the exhibition is dedicated to the creation of the Centre for Asia Minor Studies in 1930 by Melpo and Octave Merlier. \nThe exhibition features works of art\, icons\, ecclesiastical\, war and personal heirlooms\, costume\, jewelry\, handicrafts\, maps\, photographs\, archival and cinematographic material\, newspapers\, letters\, postcards\, and many other items. Excerpts from personal testimonies complement the narrative\, bringing images and silent objects to life. \nThe exhibition runs from September 15\, 2022 until February 12\, 2023.\nThursday\, Sunday: 10:00-18:00\nFriday\, Saturday: 10:00-22:00
