Onassis Professor of Hellenic Culture and Civilization\,\nDepartment of History\, New York University (NYU) \nMarch 2\, 2024 \n4:00 p.m. \nUCLA Fowler Museum\, Lenart Auditorium\nReception to follow \nEvent is free but advanced registration is requested\n \nIntroductory remarks by The Honorable Christina Valassopoulou\, Consul General of Greece in Los Angeles. \nThis lecture will not be livestreamed or recorded. \nIn his poem “O gyrismos tou xenitimenou” (“The Return of the Exile”)\, Giorgos Seferis famously wrote that the protagonist’s nostalgia for Greece had created a “non-existent country.” \nWe access the past in various ways\, none of them totally reliable: memory\, nostalgia\, history — carry with them different implications and different defects. This talk will consider various ways in which these different pathways to the past connect to modern Greek history\, literature\, and nationalism. Drawing on examples from contemporary oral history and from Greek-Jewish memoirs\, it will consider the various ways in which the past is always with us — and always changing. \nKatherine Elizabeth Fleming is President and CEO of the J. Paul Getty Trust and the Alexander S. Onassis Professor of Hellenic Culture and Civilization in the Department of History at New York University (NYU)\, where she served as Provost from 2016 to 2022. A historian of Modern Greece and the Mediterranean\, her interests range from religious identity to historical memory to oral history. In Greece she is the co-director of the large-scale public history project ISTORIMA.ORG\, which she co-founded with the journalist Sofia Papaioannou with a significant grant from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.  From 2012-2016 she was President of the Board of the University of Piraeus in Greece. She currently serves as a political appointee to the administrative board of the University of Paris system in France.  \nThis event is being co-sponsored by the LMU Basil P. However\, we are a long way away from full convergence to Standard Greek\, and the pancypriot variety displays linguistic vitality. In her talk\, Professor Tsiplakou examines some of the reasons why Cypriot Greek does not fully converge with Standard Greek and argues that this is due to both structural and social factors\, including the increased local prestige of the dialect. \nStavroula Tsiplakou is Associate Professor of Linguistics\, Dean of Arts\, and Academic Coordinator of the M.A. program in Greek Linguistics and Literature at the Open University of Cyprus. She holds a B.A. in Greek Literature from the University of Athens\, an M.Phil. in Linguistics from the University of Cambridge\, and a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of London. Her research areas include syntax\, pragmatics\, text linguistics\, sociolinguistics\, and educational linguistics. She has published in Lingua\, Linguistic Inquiry\, Pragmatics\, Journal of Pragmatics\, and Multilingua\, Linguistics and Education. DESCRIPTION:“The Dolphin-Haunted Artifacts of Dimmed Atlantis:” Evocations of Graeco-Roman Antiquity during the HIV/AIDS Crisis \nLecture by Emilio Capettini\, Assistant Professor\, UC Santa Barbara \nWednesday\, November 15\, 2023\n5:00 p.m.\n248 Dodd Hall\nReception to follow \nNo RSVP required \nReflections on memory and oblivion\, erasure and persistence\, and fragmentation and integrity pervade the rich output of queer artists and writers in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic\, and the oeuvres of the American writer Paul Monette and of the British “Renaissance man” Derek Jarman are no exception. This talk will examine how encounters\, whether real or imagined\, with the literary and material remnants of Graeco-Roman antiquity shaped Monette’s and Jarman’s ruminations over the dialectical oppositions just mentioned\, engendering philological and archaeological fantasies that played a key role in the articulation of their artistic practices. \nEmilio Capettini received his B.A. and M.A. from the University of Pisa and the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa. He completed his Ph.D. at Princeton University in 2016 with a dissertation entitled “An Improbable Symphony: Genealogy\, Paternity\, and Identity in Heliodorus’ Aethiopica.” In addition to the ancient novel\, he is keenly interested in Greek epic poetry\, Greek tragedy\, and classical reception studies. At the moment\, Emilio is completing a monograph that explores the dynamics of selfhood in Heliodorus’ Aethiopica. His next project\, provisionally titled “Greek Characters Erasing in the Weather:” Queer Returns to Antiquity during the AIDS Crisis\, will examine how\, since the early ’80s\, queer writers and artists active in North America and the UK (e.g.\, John Dugdale\, Derek Jarman\, Mark Merlis\, and Paul Monette) have turned to the literary and material traces of Greco-Roman antiquity as they have reacted to\, and reflected on\, the sudden and seemingly inexplicable onset of HIV/AIDS. \nThe event is the inaugural lecture in the Reception of Hellenic Culture Lecture Series\, co-organized by the UCLA Stavros Niarchos Foundation Center for the Study of Hellenic Culture and the UCLA Department of Classics. \nThis program is made possible thanks to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF).

DESCRIPTION:Pigments in Ancient Greek Painting & Medicine: \nEcology\, Materiality and the Alchemical Laboratory\nlecture by\nIoanna Kakoulli\n(Department of Materials Science and Engineering\, UCLA) \nSaturday\, April 29\, 2023\n3:00 p.m.\n306 Royce Hall\nReception to follow \nAncient Greek paintings between the fourth century BC and the third century AD are characterized by a splendor of colors\, high artistic quality and rich pictorial effects such as shading\, translucency and transparency\, innovations that characterize and mark the art of Greek and later Roman painting traditions. Through the scientific analysis of surviving paintings—mainly wall paintings—this lecture explores the material ecology and intrinsic optical\, chemical and microstructural properties of pigments in Late Classical and Hellenistic painting. It further interrogates how these properties contributed to the paintings’ qualities\, aesthetics and function and their technological association with ancient makeup and therapeutic substances\, philosophy and early al(chemical) practices. Data is presented in the context of seminal texts of ancient writers such as Dioscorides\, Theophrastus\, Vitruvius and Pliny the Elder describing the chemical arts of color\, cosmetics and medicaments\, and alchemical recipes from two third-century AD Greek papyri\, which provide the earliest surviving direct evidence on ancient alchemical practices for the synthesis of colored compounds. \nIoanna Kakoulli\, who will serve as Acting Director of the UCLA SNF Hellenic Center in 2023-2024\, is a professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering with a joint appointment in the Archaeology Interdepartmental Degree Program and the UCLA/Getty Conservation Program\, in which she served as the inaugural ‘Lore and Gerald Cunard’ Program Term Chair from 2011 to 2017. Since 2018\, Professor Kakoulli has also held the honorary adjunct professor title at the University of Cyprus. DESCRIPTION:‘From the Tip of My Little Finger a River Flows:’\nYannis Ritsos’s Response to Dictatorship (1967-1970) \nA lecture by\nDr. John Kittmer\, former British ambassador to Greece\nin celebration of National Poetry Month. \nApril 22\, 2023\n10:00 AM Los Angeles/8:00 PM Athens\nVia Zoom \nOpening remarks by Her Excellency\nAlexandra Papadopoulou\,\nAmbassador of Greece to the United States \nExclusive poetry reading by renowned Greek actor \nStelios Mainas (Tetarti 04:45\, Mystikes Diadromes\, The Island) \nIn the first days of the Greek military dictatorship of 1967-1974\, Yannis Ritsos was imprisoned without trial: he was held initially in internment camps on the islands of Gyaros and Leros\, and then under house arrest at the family home in Karlovasi on Samos. The period of his confinement was lifted only in November 1970. During much of this period\, he was not only confined and harassed by the authorities\, but he was also very unwell. Despite this\, he managed to write and to maintain\, for the most part\, an astonishing rate of productivity\, producing nine collections of short poems and several long poems in different forms. In this talk\, we will look at Ritsos’ life and work during these years of confinement\, examining his poetic response – in short and long poems alike – to the conditions in which he was held\, the psychological pressures under which he was placed\, and the wider abuses of the military dictatorship. We shall consider the extent to which poetry offered Ritsos some sort of solution to the challenges he faced. \nJohn Kittmer is a former British ambassador to Greece and is the chair of The Anglo-Hellenic League. He has degrees in classics and modern Greek\, and wrote a prize-winning Ph.D. thesis on Yannis Ritsos. He is working on several publication projects in connection with Ritsos. DESCRIPTION:The Travelling Players (O Thiassos) Greece\, 1975 \nA powerful vision of postwar Greek history as experienced by a troupe of actors on perennial tour\, The Travelling Players swept the awards at the 1975 Thessaloniki Film Festival and announced Theo Angelopoulos as a major international auteur. A multi-generational ensemble\, the players drag themselves and their trunks from one train station and theater to the next\, seemingly inured to the sweep of politics and war around them until they each\, inevitably\, become enmeshed with the tumult of their times. DESCRIPTION:Ulysses’ Gaze (To Vlemma tou Odissea) Greece\, 1995 \nTheo Angelopoulos once confessed to an interviewer\, “I would like to believe the world will be saved by the cinema.” Ulysses’ Gaze gives this hope form as a Greek filmmaker known as A (Harvey Keitel) becomes obsessed with finding lost reels of film shot by the Manaki Brothers\, Yanaki and Milton\, real-life film pioneers who made the first movies in the Balkans. Relentlessly pursuing their whereabouts across the war-shattered region\, he comes to believe that this “first gaze” from the beginning of the century might reveal some meaning to those struggling at its end.
