We are no longer accepting RSVPs. \nThis discussion will be moderated by Professor Sharon Gerstel\, Director\, UCLA SNF Center for the Study of Hellenic Culture and Dr. Eirini Kotsovili\, Senior Lecturer\, Global Humanities\, Simon Fraser University. \nOne of the deadliest wildfires ever recorded took place on July 23\, 2018 in Mati\, just 30 km from the historical center of Athens. Writer and artist Katerina Angelopoulou survived the fire\, and her book\, The Fumes of Mars\, combines her photographs with personal testimonies from other survivors\, timelines\, maps\, and reports. With these materials\, Angelopoulou attempts to weave a collective narrative of the events to better understand the violent disconnect between her own experience and the “official” account of the disaster in which facts were concealed and victims held culpable. \nThe book opens with black and white photographs showing the aftermath of the fire alongside testimonies of the survivors. These are followed by Angelopoulou’s photographs\, taken as the disaster unfolded\,overlaid with her timeline of events. Collected evidence on the events follows\, including aerial maps\, topographical information\, lists of the victims with location and cause of death\, weather and aircraft reports\, CCTV and news coverage images\, information from the State Investigator report\, and information on the ongoing trial. The final images of the book are of Angelopoulou’s personal artifacts after the fire\, such as remnants of jewelry\, books\, and glasses. This assembled evidence is embedded with importance because after the fire\, the truth of the victims and their families was questioned multiple times—in the public narrative\, facts were concealed and re-produced with false arguments blaming residents and victims. \nKaterina Angelopoulou is a writer and artist based in Athens. The Fumes of Mars won the Format Festival’s Reviewers’ Choice Award 2022\, was selected for the COCA Project 2021\, shortlisted for the Belfast Dummy Award and Photo Festival in 2022\, and exhibited at LCC in London as part of the Common Ground Exhibition. Rather than consent to spinsterhood at the age of twenty-seven\, Eleni sets sail with her seafaring father for Italy\, where she is to study painting at the famed School of the Nazarenes. Once in Naples\, Eleni flees her female identity and\, disguised as a young man\, walks with her father to Rome. Along the way she falls in love with her would-be husband while learning to navigate life in a man’s world\, as a man. Eleni\, or Nobody depicts the struggle between the female and male sexes\, Greek and foreign culture\, Greek Orthodoxy and Catholicism\, and erotic love and motherhood. Every morning Eleni’s rebirth as Nobody allows her to overcome the constraints of her gender and partake in her life’s struggle. Love reveals her femininity\, however\, and Eleni converts to Catholicism in order to marry the father of her two children. When she is later deserted\, Eleni is left with a shattered identity\, having been rejected by her husband because of her masculine ways and exiled from the art world because she is female. After the death of her two children\, Eleni spends the last twenty years of her life living alone. She continues to questions her identity as her life choices begin to spark various rumors that she may be either a powerful\, mad magician or just another crazy\, old woman. \nRhea Galanaki is considered Greece’s foremost woman novelist. She was born in Crete in 1947 and studied history and archaeology at the University of Athens. She is the author of several books of poetry and criticism as well as two other novels\, The Life of Ismail Ferik Pasha (Peter Owen\, Ltd.\, 1996) and Eleni\, or No One. However\, we are a long way away from full convergence to Standard Greek\, and the pancypriot variety displays linguistic vitality. In her talk\, Professor Tsiplakou examines some of the reasons why Cypriot Greek does not fully converge with Standard Greek and argues that this is due to both structural and social factors\, including the increased local prestige of the dialect. \nStavroula Tsiplakou is Associate Professor of Linguistics\, Dean of Arts\, and Academic Coordinator of the M.A. program in Greek Linguistics and Literature at the Open University of Cyprus. She holds a B.A. in Greek Literature from the University of Athens\, an M.Phil. in Linguistics from the University of Cambridge\, and a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of London. Her research areas include syntax\, pragmatics\, text linguistics\, sociolinguistics\, and educational linguistics. She has published in Lingua\, Linguistic Inquiry\, Pragmatics\, Journal of Pragmatics\, and Multilingua\, Linguistics and Education. DESCRIPTION:‘From the Tip of My Little Finger a River Flows:’\nYannis Ritsos’s Response to Dictatorship (1967-1970) \nA lecture by\nDr. John Kittmer\, former British ambassador to Greece\nin celebration of National Poetry Month. \nApril 22\, 2023\n10:00 AM Los Angeles/8:00 PM Athens\nVia Zoom \nOpening remarks by Her Excellency\nAlexandra Papadopoulou\,\nAmbassador of Greece to the United States \nExclusive poetry reading by renowned Greek actor \nStelios Mainas (Tetarti 04:45\, Mystikes Diadromes\, The Island) \nIn the first days of the Greek military dictatorship of 1967-1974\, Yannis Ritsos was imprisoned without trial: he was held initially in internment camps on the islands of Gyaros and Leros\, and then under house arrest at the family home in Karlovasi on Samos. The period of his confinement was lifted only in November 1970. During much of this period\, he was not only confined and harassed by the authorities\, but he was also very unwell. Despite this\, he managed to write and to maintain\, for the most part\, an astonishing rate of productivity\, producing nine collections of short poems and several long poems in different forms. In this talk\, we will look at Ritsos’ life and work during these years of confinement\, examining his poetic response – in short and long poems alike – to the conditions in which he was held\, the psychological pressures under which he was placed\, and the wider abuses of the military dictatorship. We shall consider the extent to which poetry offered Ritsos some sort of solution to the challenges he faced. \nJohn Kittmer is a former British ambassador to Greece and is the chair of The Anglo-Hellenic League. He has degrees in classics and modern Greek\, and wrote a prize-winning Ph.D. thesis on Yannis Ritsos. He is working on several publication projects in connection with Ritsos. His recent collaboration with the poet David Harsent on the poetry Ritsos wrote in the early years of the Colonels’ dictatorship will be published at the end of March (David Harsent\, A Broken Man in Flower: Versions of Yannis Ritsos\, introduction by John Kittmer [Hexham: Bloodaxe Books\, 2023]). \nIn case you missed it\, please view the video of the presentation below: \n \nThe event is cosponsored by the Embassy of Greece in the United States. \nThis program is supported by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF).

View a recording of this talk here. \nModern Greek is taught and learned across North America mainly as a heritage language\, through a complex education system that includes a variety of programs and learning materials\, as well as a diverse group of learners and teachers. This presentation discusses experiences\, community projects\, and studies from Toronto\, a representative anglophone multicultural city\, in order to examine the broader conditions of Greek language education in the diaspora. Asking how today’s schools and programs can serve the needs of future generations\, we examine some of the challenges faced by educators and community leaders: What is language shift and how it can be resisted? What’s the position of heritage languages in our society? What are the priorities for today’s parents and students and how can Greek language programs meet their needs? Has the pandemic affected the learning of Greek in the USA and in Canada? What types of opportunities emerge from information and communication technologies for our schools and communities? Proposing synergies between schools\, universities\, and community partners\, we argue that the future of Greek language education is ours to envision and plan. \nThemistoklis Aravossitas earned his BA in Education at the University of Athens. He completed his graduate studies at the University of Toronto\, with an MA and a PhD in Curriculum\, Teaching and Learning at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. He specializes in Heritage Languages\, Teacher Education\, and Knowledge Media Design. His doctoral work\, titled The Hidden Schools\, explored Greek language education in Canada. He is a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of the Aegean. He teaches Modern Greek at the Centre for European Studies in the Munk School of Global Affairs\, and at the Department of Languages\, Literature and Linguistics of York University. His scholarly work includes the co-edited volumes: Language Diversity in Greece: Local Challenges with International Implications (Springer\, 2020); Interdisciplinary Research Approaches to Multilingual Education (Routledge\, 2019); Handbook of Research and Practice in Heritage Language Education (Springer\, 2018). \nThe event is cosponsored by the Embassy of Greece in the United States and the Consulate General of Greece in Los Angeles. \nThis program is supported by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF)

DESCRIPTION:This panel brings together distinguished scholars of Greek cinema to discuss the Greek director’s enduring contributions to a global cinema of time\, history\, and social crisis. Our speakers will discuss various aspects of Angelopoulos’s contemporaneity\, from the global impact of his distinctive filmic style and the philosophical dimensions of his visual language to the cinematic representation of issues that deeply challenge us today\, including migration\, social identity and displacement. The panel showcases Angelopoulos as an artist and thinker vital to our own grasp of our present and future. \nPanelists: \n\nVangelis Calotychos is Associate Professor of Classics at Brown University and Executive Director of the Modern Greek Studies Association). He is the author of Modern Greece\, a Cultural Poetics (2004) and The Balkan Prospect: Identity\, Culture\, and Politics in Greece after 1989 (2013)\, and editor of Manolis Anagnostakis: Poetry and Politics\, Silence and Agency in Post-War Greece (2012).\nVrasidas Karalis holds the Chair of Sir Nicholas Laurantos in Modern Greek and Byzantine Studies at the University of Sydney. He has translated Patrick White’s Voss and The Vivisector. He is the editor of Modern Greek Studies (Australian and New Zealand). His main publications in English include\, A History of Greek Cinema (Continuum 2012)\, Realism in Greek Cinema (I.B. Tauris\, 2017)\, Recollections of Mr Manoly Lascaris (Brandl & Sclesinger\, 2007)\, The Demons of Athens (Brandl & Schlesinger\, 2013)\, Reflections on Presence (re. Press\, 2016)\, The Cinematic Language of Theo Angelopoulos (Berhghan Press\, 2021) and the forthcoming Theo Angelopoulos Philosopher and Filmmaker (Palgrave 2023). He has also edited the collections Cornelios Castoriadis and the Project of Radical Democracy (2013)\, Martin Heidegger and the Aesthetics of Being (2008)\, Power\, Justice and Judgement in Hannah Arendt (2012). He is currently working on the Australian film-maker George Miller.\nLydia Papadimitriou is Reader (Associate Professor) in Film Studies at Liverpool John Moores University. DESCRIPTION:In this lecture\, part of the Hellenic Together 4.0 series held in collaboration with the Benaki Museum in Athens\, exhibition curator Evita Arapoglou leads us through “Asia Minor Hellenism: Heyday – Catastrophe – Displacement – Rebirth.” \nThis program is supported by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF). \nAbout the Exhibit \nVisitors to the exhibition begin their journey in the ‘heyday’ of Asia Minor Hellenism in Ionia and the west coast. They proceed to Cappadocia and the southern provinces\, travel to Pontus\, continue towards the west and the environs of Istanbul\, and end up in Eastern Thrace. \nThe heyday is followed by the period of persecutions\, the conclusion of World War I and the ensuing Treaties\, the period of the Greek landing in Asia Minor and the ensuing Campaign\, the ‘Catastrophe’ of 1922\, as well as the ‘Exodus’ of refugees. \nThe third and final section of the exhibition focuses on the settlement and integration of refugees in Greece\, as well as their impact on many sectors of Greek society. Part of the epilogue of the exhibition is dedicated to the creation of the Centre for Asia Minor Studies in 1930 by Melpo and Octave Merlier. \nThe exhibition features works of art\, icons\, ecclesiastical\, war and personal heirlooms\, costume\, jewelry\, handicrafts\, maps\, photographs\, archival and cinematographic material\, newspapers\, letters\, postcards\, and many other items. Excerpts from personal testimonies complement the narrative\, bringing images and silent objects to life. \nThe exhibition runs from September 15\, 2022 until February 12\, 2023.\nThursday\, Sunday: 10:00-18:00\nFriday\, Saturday: 10:00-22:00

SUMMARY:Roger Michel\, "Phidias Unbound: How Robot-Generated Replicas Could Solve the Parthenon Marbles Quandary"
DESCRIPTION:The Parthenon Marbles\, commonly known as the Elgin Marbles\, were removed from the ancient Acropolis of Athens in 1801 by Lord Elgin\, British ambassador to the Ottoman Empire. Carved by the sculptor Phidias\, they were eventually sold to the British government in 1817 and are housed in the British Museum. Public debate about repatriating the marbles is heated and ongoing. \nCan the creation of exact copies of the originals resolve the repatriation quandary? Roger Michel\, executive director of the Institute of Digital Archaeology\, at the University of Oxford\, believes the repatriation issue can be resolved with the help of 3-D machining. His research team has developed a robot with the ability to create faithful copies of large historical objects. Michel will explore humanity’s connection to culturally significant objects and the emphasis we place on physical possession. Is possession an inherently colonial concept? Are heritage assets particularly susceptible to being exploited for the purposes of historical revisionism? Under what circumstances can copies provide satisfactory substitutes for original material? These questions will be examined against the backdrop of the IDA’s ongoing Elgin repatriation efforts. \nRoger Michel is the founder and Executive Director of the Institute for Digital Archaeology (IDA). The IDA operates globally\, undertaking a huge variety of heritage projects\, many of which are aimed at advancing social justice goals. Its principal partners are the UN\, UNESCO\, and local and national governments. Mr. Michel has published and lectured frequently on various heritage conservation topics. He was a member of the faculty at BU Law School for 25 years\, is an Honorary Fellow of Trinity College (Oxford)\, and is co-publisher of Arion Magazine. Mr. Michel is a graduate of Harvard and Oxford Universities. \nThis event\, co-presented by the UCLA/Getty Program in the Conservation of Cultural Heritage\, is being held under the auspices of the Consulate General of Greece in Los Angeles and with the generous support of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.

SUMMARY:Johanna Hanink\, "Bones\, Stones\, Trees\, and Roots: On the Enduring Urgency of Karkavitsas' Archeologist (1904)"
DESCRIPTION:How does a novella written more than one hundred years ago help to illuminate pressing issues in Greece today? Karkavitsas’ Archeologist\, an allegory for the contestation of antiquity’s role in Greek modernity\, was published at a time when Greece’s ancient past was emerging as a modern national industry. Major excavations were tied to the establishment of foreign schools in Greece\, while the sheer quantity of new archeological inspired a boom in museum construction. This talk will explore some of the early critiques that the work offered of the early Greek antiquity industry\, and of the mentalities – both foreign and domestic – that drove it. In the spirit of National Translation Day\, this talk will also consider the work’s many reflections on the Greek language (and the “Language Question”)\, as well as the complications the work itself presents for translation on both linguistic and cultural levels.  \nJohanna Hanink is Professor of Classics at Brown University. She is the author of Lycurgan Athens and the Making of Classical Tragedy (Cambridge 2014) and The Classical Debt: Greek Antiquity in an Age of Austerity (Harvard 2017). She is also a translator of Ancient and Modern Greek. \nThis lecture is offered on the occasion of International Translation Day\, in collaboration with the Embassy of Greece in Washington\, DC\, the UCLA Department of Classics\, and the Archaeological Institute of America\, Los Angeles Chapter. The entire Greek and Armenian quarters of the city were destroyed\, forcing civilians to flee.
