DESCRIPTION:Weaving Community: A Presentation of the UCLA SNF Hellenic Center’s Work in Greece and Los Angeles \nLecture by \nProfessor Sharon Gerstel\nDirector\, UCLA Stavros Niarchos Foundation Center for the Study of Hellenic Culture \nSeptember 29\, 2024\n2:00 PM\n \nThe Wilson-Hanks Family Cultural Center\,\nSt. Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral\nReception to follow \nIntroductory remarks by The Honorable Christina Valassopoulou\, Consul General of Greece in Los Angeles \nProfessor Sharon Gerstel\, director of the UCLA SNF Hellenic Center and George P. Kolovos Family Centennial Term Chair in Hellenic Studies\, will discuss the work of the Center in Los Angeles and Greece\, focusing especially on a large-scale\, multi-year project about weaving in the village of Geraki\, Lakonia. This project\, sponsored by Gefyra\, forms the basis of an upcoming exhibition at the Benaki Museum and a comprehensive catalog in both Greek and English. In an open and wide-ranging discussion\, Professor Gerstel will also present upcoming programming for the Center and discuss the Center’s mission and plans for the future. Joining Professor Gerstel will be Mrs. Chrysoula Stamatopoulou\, lead weaving instructor in Geraki\, who will also discuss the village’s weaving tradition\, which began in the ancient period and is still active today. Mrs. Stamatopoulou will demonstrate weaving on the vertical loom for those attending. \nAccompanying this event will be an exhibition of family heirlooms by the Greek Heritage Society. For their exhibition\, the GHS is looking for members of the Greek community of Los Angeles to share heirlooms that have come from Greece and have been passed down to children\, grandchildren\, and other relatives. They are particularly interested in woven items\, but other handicrafts\, such as embroidery can be shared. If you are interested in taking part in the event\, please contact Bessie Karras-Lazaris\, President of the Greek Heritage Society at greekheritage@hotmail.com. Under the email subject heading “Heirloom Project\,” please provide your name\, contact information\, and a brief description of the item(s) you would like to share. If selected\, you will be asked to write a longer description per guidelines that the GHS will provide along with your items on the day of the event. This promises to be a night of culinary delights and cultural exploration that you won’t want to miss!  \nLecture: Writing A Traditional Cypriot Cookbook: A Study of Cypriot Culture through a Culinary Lens\nThe process of writing a cookbook is different for each author. In Christina Loucas’ case\,  a Cypriot who grew up in Canada\, she set out to preserve her family’s traditional Cypriot recipes by living in Cyprus for 4 years and accumulating recipes. In doing so\, she inadvertently came to understand that the idea of a “traditional recipe” was much more than just a list of ingredients and method.  In her lecture\, Christina talks about her personal journey of writing and photographing her cookbook\, the definition of  a “traditional Cypriot recipe”\,  and the relationship between Cypriot culture and culinary traditions.  She does so alongside a visual showcase of photographs and a delicious Cypriot dinner meant to highlight these talking points. \nAuthor/Speaker Bio:\nChristina Loucas was raised on Vancouver Island\, Canada by Greek-Cypriot parents. She worked for six years as an international arbitration lawyer in London\, Singapore and Canada after a law degree from Oxford University. Following a sudden illness\, she decided to change her life\, move to Cyprus\, and to follow her passion for food and photography. With her now very successful blog (www.afroditeskitchen.com)\, she brings to the attention of the international public all the beauty and ingredients of her Cyprus. She published her first cookbook called “Cyprus Cuisine” in 2021. \nCookbook Summary:\nCyprus Cuisine is a colorful and thorough account of Cypriot cooking. Christina invites the reader into a Cypriot kitchen with traditional and modern recipes\, which are easy to follow and accessible. It is sure to delight anyone with a taste for Mediterranean and Middle Eastern flavours.
