Hear ancient hymns honoring the city’s patron\, the ever-popular St. Demetrios\, sung on the weekend of his annual feast day. Experience ecstatic Byzantine chants for the saint adorning the Cathedral Rite of Constantinople\, sung by the women and men of Cappella Romana. \nThis program\, held under the auspices of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco and the Consulate General of Greece in Los Angeles\, is made possible thanks to the generous support of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF)\, the Peter J. and Caroline B. Caloyeras Endowment for the Arts\, and the Mary Calfas Janos Program Fund. DESCRIPTION:Under the fog of war during World War 1\, the genocide of the Greeks was carried out at the hands of the Ottoman and Nationalist Turks. This Genocide became the model for all Genocides to follow\, Nearly a million Greeks were killed\, and millions more were uprooted as part of the Ottoman and Nationalist Turks’ campaign of ethnic cleansing. Lethal Nationalism explores this dark chapter of history. \nBill Kurtis\, legendary television news anchorman\, narrates this powerful documentary. “This production is one of the most important projects that I’ve ever been associated with and it provides a sobering lesson as to why we should never forget the suffering that is caused by genocide.” – Bill Kurtis \nThe screening will be followed by Q & A with the film’s director and co-producer Peter Lambrinatos\, co-producer Spiro Lambrinatos\, and George Mavropoulos\, President of the Asia Minor and Pontos Hellenic Research Center. Opening remarks will be offered by the Consul General of Greece in Los Angeles\, the Honorable Ioannis Stamatekos. \nA $10 suggested contribution will benefit the work of the Asia Minor and Pontos Hellenic Research Center.

Normandie Ave\, Los Angeles\, CA 90006 \nThis moving historical saga\, Smyrna\, My Beloved\, follows a prominent Greek family forced to endure the burning of the vibrant cosmopolitan city of Smyrna in 1922 by the Turks and the killing of its Greek and Armenian populations. In the present\, a young Greek-American woman\, visiting Greece with her grandmother to support the Syrian refugees\, discovers that the Smyrna tragedy destroyed her own family 100 years earlier. \nDirected by Grigoris Karantinakis\, the film features Mimi Denissi\, Leonidas Kakouris\, Burak Hakki\, Katerina Geronikolou\, Jane Lapotaire\, Susan Hampshire\, Rupert Graves\, Christos Stergioglou\, and Daphne Alexander. In English\, Greek\, Turkish\, and French with English subtitles.\nNote: This film contains scenes that may be too intense for young viewers. \nIn addition\, the event will include the short documentary\, The Full Catastrophe\, which was written and produced by Linda Reid Chassiakos. This film is based on the true story of the writer’s mother’s family in 1922; her family members were slaughtered by the Turkish soldiers as the survivors tried to make a heroic escape from Smyrna amidst the devastation and genocide. \nBefore the screenings\, the Honorable Ioannis Stamatekos\, Consul General of Greece in Los Angeles\, the Honorable Andreas Kyprianides\, Honorary Consul General of Cyprus in Los Angeles\, and Dr. James F. Dimitriou\, President & Chairman of the American Hellenic Council will address the community on the 100th anniversary of the burning of Smyrna. \nThis event\, presented by the American Hellenic Council of California\, the UCLA Stavros Niarchos Foundation Center for the Study of Hellenic Culture\, and the Los Angeles Greek Film Festival\, is further supported by St. Sophia Cathedral and the Hellenic Society of Constantinople.
