Yedikule: Fortress Turned Prison

March 9, 2019 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Jan Popper Theater, Schoenberg Hall, 445 Charles E. Young Drive
Los Angeles, CA 90095 United States

This special event presents rebetiko music inspired by the fearsome prison in Thessaloniki, dramatic readings of the testimonies of the prisoners, and images from inside the cells. Once a Byzantine fortress known as the Heptapyrgion, the prison is now used as offices for the archaeological service, for performances, and for exhibitions. Yet, the voices of the prisoners and the music they inspired still resonates within the structure’s walls.
