Western Consortium of Hellenic Studies Photo Competition 2025

The Western Consortium of Hellenic Studies invites all interested undergraduate and graduate students from the West Coast of the United States and Canada to submit their best photograph for the competition. All photos must be original. The first-place winner will receive a new iPhone, while the second-place winner will receive a $100 Amazon gift card.

About the Theme “Greece: East Meets West”

Greece serves as a cultural, historical, and geographical bridge between the East and West. Your challenge is to capture a photograph that represents influences, impacts, or the presence of these different cultural strands.

Be creative! Your photograph can showcase many creative connections at any time period of Greece’s history, including the modern day. For example:

  • Eastern and Western influences on cuisine
  • Music and dance traditions blending both aspects
  • Works of art, including paintings and sculpture
  • Architectural elements reflecting both styles
  • Historical meeting points of East and West
  • Everyday cultural expressions highlighting this connection
  • Linguistic connections manifested in newspapers or literature

Competition Rules:

  • Please send your entries to Nikki Erinakis, Program Manager at the UCLA SNF Center for the Study of Hellenic Culture, by September 1, 2025, at hellenic@humnet.ucla.edu.
  • All submissions should be in JPG or TIFF format, with a resolution of at least 300 DPI.
  • Include a title for the photo, the location where it was taken, and a brief paragraph describing the subject for use as an exhibition label.
  • Submissions should also include the photographer’s name, university affiliation (please attach a copy of your student ID), and contact information.

Eligibility:

All undergraduate and graduate students from the West Coast of the United States and Canada.
