West Coast Hellenic Undergraduate Photo Competition 2024

Hellenic Photo Competition 2024

The West Coast Consortium of Hellenic Studies Programs invites all interested undergraduate students from the West Coast of the United States and Canada to submit their best photograph for the competition. All photos must be original.

About the Theme:

The photo contest centers on the theme “Fragments of Greece,” which encourages undergraduate participants to submit images captured anywhere in the world that reflect the essence of Greece or are inspired by Greek culture through a fragment of an item.

  • What fragments can you photograph that suggest to the viewer the idea of Greece and Greekness?
  • The fragments could range in size from the minute (e.g. a string of komboloi) to the large (e.g. part of a column) but it is important that the image be a fragment that suggests a whole: the idea of Greece or Greekness.
  • The fragment does not need to be in Greece nor does the photograph need to have been taken in Greece: in fact, the competition is more about finding images of Greekness outside of Greece.
  • The more original the fragment the better: try to avoid clichés like the Acropolis in Athens.

Competition Rules:

  • Please send your entries to Nikki Erinakis, Program Manager at the UCLA SNF Center for the Study of Hellenic Culture, by September 1, 2024, at hellenic@humnet.ucla.edu.

  • Include a title for the photo, the location where it was taken, and a brief paragraph describing the subject for use as an exhibition label.
